The Kare Bear Invitational is an annual golf tournament that has contributed more than $685,000 to 30 different youth programs over the past twenty-three years. Karen W. Smith and Anne Pinkston initiated it in 1988 as a vehicle to raise funds for South County youth-oriented projects and organizations. Our mission is to support South Berkshire County non-profit youth-oriented activities.
Twenty-three years ago the Kare Bear Invitational was, “just a group of people sitting around a kitchen table trying to help kids,” as one of our board members said. Today, KareBear Inc. is a registered 501c3 charity with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the IRS. We have developed four separate divisions of Kare Bear, Inc. The Kare Bear Invitational supports youth-based groups which vary from year to year. A dedicated group of volunteers puts on the tournament, ranging from as few as 15 in 1988 to over 100 this year. KareBear Inc. is an endowment fund held at the Berkshire Taconic Foundation to ensure the ongoing support of youth programs here in the Southern Berkshires. The Principal’s Discretionary Fund was created for students, grades 6-12, of the Berkshire Hills and Southern Berkshire Regional School Districts. Finally, Kare Bear Christmas gives us a project in the winter months to provide Christmas for families with children.
